Even if no strict mandatory limits and values for emission outputs are in place, an increasing awareness of air quality is noticed at the top management level. Many Chinese managers and decision makers realised the importance as well as the benefits of clean air at the workplace and are now implementing this knowledge. Air filtration does not only save the environment, it also offers substantial advantages for the plant, leading to decreasing costs and increasing productivity.
How can benefits through air filtration be explained? Air purification costs money, and an exhaust air filtration system always requires an additional investment.
Die casting machines generate greasy, oily and paste-like smoke and aerosols. There are still some managers think the easiest and cheapest method of exhaust air treatment is by no treatment at all. Allowing exhaust air to disperse into the production hall without being purified is hardly a cost-saving method. What is often not considered is the greasy aerosols that will deposit on the newly made products and the entire manufacturing plant. The oily depositions affects the product quality, increase the necessity of maintenance. Furthermore, the casting machines, peripheral devices as well as the building itself suffer from accumulating dirt on the surfaces. Air pollution has a negative effect on employees of the foundries resulting in illness and decreased productivity. When we summarise the facts it shows that the company actually saves in the additional investment in an air filtration system, but causes remarkable extra costs in other important sectors. These extra costs will balance out after a short time. If the foundry made a one-time investment for an exhaust air filtration system, the company would achieve significant cost-savings through out the years, which will compensate the initial investment by a short payback period. When considering the investment that needs to be done for building-up a new foundry plant, including casting machines, peripheral devices and the facility itself, the additional expenditure for an exhaust air filter system is relatively low. Savings of up to 80% is a fairly large amount. How is that possible and how does that work?
With the exhaust air mode, waste air is led outside either with or without air purification. This method ensures clean air at the workplace but creates high follow-up costs, especially during cold winter periods. The same amount of air that is led outside has to be replaced by incoming fresh air from outdoors, which has to be heated up first before it is led inside. Heating the cold fresh air up to room temperature will cause high operation costs for the company. At the same time the environment becomes polluted by high CO2 emissions caused by the heating process. In a recirculating air mode, the exhaust air will be effectively with the use of highly efficient KMA electrostatic filter units. After filtration, the purified air will be led back into the production hall. Air is circulating in the hall and has no heat loss caused by the exhaust air. The total energy consumption of the foundry decreases up to 80% and at the same time high amounts of carbon dioxide emissions are avoided.
