On August 6, 2013, a new engine plant foundation laying ceremony of BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. was held in Tiexi District, Shenyang, China. The new engine plant will be implemented in several phases, starting in 2013, with production commencing in 2016. It has a planned annual production capacity of 400,000 units. It will manufacture the most advanced BMW engines and all products will be provided to domestic automobiles. In the future, all key engine parts, including cylinder blocks and heads, will be produced locally. Crankshafts, camshafts and connecting rods have been produced locally since 2012.
The new plant is the first foundry workshop outside Germany, and the second workshop of BMW in the world. The light metal foundry workshop will adopt the latest low pressure casting technology of BMW, as well as use new ecofriendly inorganic binders to replace traditional organic binders for making sand cores, which will reduce the hazardous substances in production to zero. With the adoption of this innovative technology, the light metal foundry production will cut the emissions of engine combustion residues by 98%. Based on a second innovation of BMW’s state-of-the-art technology in plant’s design and construction, the BMW Brilliance’s new plant will be one of the most advanced modern workshops in the world, leading the domestic light metal foundry industry. By its completion, the plant will be the most advanced and cleanest workshop in China’s automobile industry. Together with the existing vehicle plant in Tiexi, it will represent the most advanced production mode and set an example for sustainable development in China’s automobile industry.
